Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for Commercial Pilot Airplane FAA ACS
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for Commercial Pilot Airplane are a set of standards that define the knowledge, skills, and abilities that pilots must demonstrate to obtain a commercial pilot certificate with an airplane rating. The ACS is a tool that examiners use to ensure that pilots have the necessary qualifications to safely operate an aircraft in commercial operations.
The ACS is divided into four sections:
- Knowledge: This section covers the knowledge that pilots must have about airplane systems, regulations, and procedures.
- Skills: This section covers the skills that pilots must demonstrate in order to safely operate an aircraft.
- Abilities: This section covers the abilities that pilots must have in order to make sound decisions and manage risk.
- Experience: This section describes the experience that pilots must have to be eligible for a commercial pilot certificate with an airplane rating.
The knowledge section of the ACS covers the following topics:

- Aircraft systems: Pilots must have a thorough understanding of aircraft systems, including engines, propellers, airframes, and avionics.
- Regulations: Pilots must be familiar with the regulations that govern commercial aviation, including the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
- Procedures: Pilots must be able to perform the procedures that are required for safe operation of an aircraft, including takeoff, landing, navigation, and emergencies.
The skills section of the ACS covers the following topics:
- Aircraft handling: Pilots must be able to safely operate an aircraft in all phases of flight, including takeoff, landing, and cruising.
- Navigation: Pilots must be able to navigate an aircraft using a variety of methods, including pilotage, dead reckoning, and radio navigation.
- Communication: Pilots must be able to communicate effectively with air traffic control and other pilots.
- Emergency procedures: Pilots must be able to respond to emergencies in a timely and effective manner.
The abilities section of the ACS covers the following topics:
- Risk management: Pilots must be able to identify and mitigate risks associated with commercial aviation.
- Decision making: Pilots must be able to make sound decisions in a timely manner, even under pressure.
- Crew resource management: Pilots must be able to work effectively with other crew members.
The experience section of the ACS describes the experience that pilots must have to be eligible for a commercial pilot certificate with an airplane rating. The requirements vary depending on the type of aircraft that the pilot will be flying.
For example, pilots who will be flying single-engine airplanes must have at least 250 hours of flight time, including 50 hours of cross-country flight. Pilots who will be flying multi-engine airplanes must have at least 1,500 hours of flight time, including 100 hours of cross-country flight.
The ACS is a valuable tool that helps ensure that pilots have the necessary qualifications to safely operate aircraft in commercial operations. The ACS provides a comprehensive overview of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience that are required for a commercial pilot certificate with an airplane rating.
