Early Life and Career

Enoch Powell was born in Birmingham, England, on 16 June 1912. His father was a schoolteacher and his mother was a devout Christian. Powell was a brilliant student, and he won a scholarship to King Edward's School, Birmingham. He went on to study Classics at Trinity College, Cambridge. After graduating from Cambridge, Powell worked as a research fellow at the University of Sydney. He returned to England in 1936 and became a lecturer at the University of Bristol.

During the Second World War, Powell served in the Royal Artillery. He rose to the rank of major and was awarded the Military Cross. After the war, Powell entered politics and was elected to Parliament for Wolverhampton South West in 1950.

Political Career

Powell was a rising star in the Conservative Party. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health from 1957 to 1958. In 1960, he was appointed Minister of Health. As Health Minister, Powell introduced a number of reforms, including the abolition of prescription charges. Powell was accused of racism and of inciting racial hatred. He was sacked from the Shadow Cabinet by Conservative leader Edward Heath. Later Career
