Synopsis
La Forza del Destino is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It was first performed at the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on 10 November 1862.
The opera tells the story of Leonora di Vargas, a young Spanish noblewoman who is in love with Don Alvaro, a Peruvian nobleman. However, Leonora's father, the Marchese di Calatrava, disapproves of the relationship and forbids Leonora from seeing Alvaro.
Leonora and Alvaro elope, but they are pursued by the Marchese and his men. Alvaro is killed in a duel with the Marchese, and Leonora is taken back to her father's house.
Leonora is distraught over the death of Alvaro, and she vows to spend the rest of her life in mourning. However, she is eventually persuaded to marry Don Carlo di Vargas, her father's choice of husband.
On the day of her wedding, Leonora learns that Alvaro is still alive. She rushes to find him, but she is too late. Alvaro has been killed by Don Carlo in a duel.
