Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed the Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448 (375a) in 1781, during his stay in Vienna. At the time, Mozart was at the height of his career, and he had already composed some of his most famous works, including the Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major, K. 467, and the Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major, K. 219.

The Sonata for Two Pianos was written for Mozart's students, the daughters of Count Franz von Walsegg. Walsegg was a wealthy patron of the arts, and he commissioned Mozart to write a number of works for his family. The sonata was first performed by Mozart and his sister, Maria Anna, at a concert in Vienna on April 14, 1781.
