Beethoven's Eroica: The First Great Romantic Symphony
Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E♭ major, Op. 55, better known as the "Eroica" Symphony, is widely regarded as one of the most important works in the history of music. It was composed in 1803–1804 and premiered in April 1805. The symphony is dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, whom Beethoven initially admired as a hero who would bring freedom and equality to Europe.
However, after Napoleon crowned himself emperor in 1804, Beethoven withdrew the dedication, saying, "Now he is nothing more than a common mortal! Now he will tread under foot all the rights of man, and indulge only his own ambition; he will place himself above all others, become a tyrant!"

The Eroica Symphony is a massive work, lasting over an hour in performance. It is in four movements:
- Allegro con brio
- Adagio assai
- Scherzo: Allegro vivace
- Finale: Allegro molto
The first movement is in sonata form and begins with a famous four-note motif that is repeated throughout the movement. The second movement is a slow, lyrical movement in the key of C minor. The third movement is a scherzo, a lively and playful movement in the key of E♭ major. The fourth movement is a large and complex movement in sonata form that ends in a triumphant C major chord.
The Eroica Symphony is a landmark in the history of music for several reasons. First, it is the first symphony to be given a programmatic title. Second, it is the first symphony to use a large orchestra, including four horns, three trombones, and a contrabassoon. Third, it is the first symphony to be in four movements, rather than the traditional three. Fourth, it is the first symphony to use a recurring motif throughout the work.
The Eroica Symphony was a critical and commercial success. It was immediately recognized as a masterpiece and has been performed and recorded countless times since its premiere. The symphony has also been the subject of much scholarly study and analysis.
The Meaning of the Eroica Symphony
The Eroica Symphony has been interpreted in many different ways. Some believe that it is a political allegory, representing Beethoven's struggle against tyranny. Others believe that it is a personal statement, representing Beethoven's own heroic struggles. Still others believe that it is simply a great work of music that transcends any specific meaning.
Whatever its meaning, the Eroica Symphony is a powerful and moving work of music that continues to inspire and amaze audiences today.
