The Nose

The external nose is a prominent facial feature composed of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue. It is divided into two nostrils by the nasal septum, a midline partition that separates the left and right nasal cavities.

The bony framework of the nose includes the nasal bones, the frontal processes of the maxillae, and the nasal processes of the frontal bone. The cartilaginous framework consists of the lateral and alar cartilages, which provide structural support and flexibility to the nasal tip and alae (wings).

The skin of the nose is thin and contains numerous sebaceous glands. The inner lining of the nose is a specialized mucosa rich in blood vessels and glands that secrete mucus and immune cells.

The Nasal Cavity

The nasal cavity is a paired, air-filled space that extends from the nostrils to the nasopharynx. It is lined with ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium, which helps to filter and warm inhaled air. The nasal cavity is divided into three regions:

The Paranasal Sinuses

The paranasal sinuses are air-filled cavities located within the bones of the skull that surround the nasal cavity. They include:

* Frontal sinuses: Located in the frontal bone. * Ethmoid sinuses: Located in the ethmoid bone. * Maxillary sinuses: Located in the maxillae. * Sphenoid sinuses: Located in the sphenoid bone.

The paranasal sinuses are lined with pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium and are connected to the nasal cavity by ostia (openings). They play a role in respiration, voice resonance, and immune function.

Clinical Significance

Understanding the clinical anatomy of the nose, nasal cavity, and paranasal sinuses is essential for diagnosing and managing various conditions, including:
