Early Encounters: Doctor Who's American Import

Doctor Who's initial foray into the American market came in the form of syndicated reruns. In 1965, the show's first two seasons were aired on a handful of local television stations in the United States. While these early broadcasts were met with limited success, they laid the groundwork for the show's eventual popularity in the US.

In 1972, Doctor Who received a major boost in the United States when public television station WGBH Boston began airing the show. WGBH's broadcasts reached a much wider audience than the previous syndicated reruns, and soon Doctor Who became a staple of public television programming in the US. The show's popularity continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as new episodes were regularly aired on WGBH and other public television stations. By the end of the 1980s, Doctor Who had become one of the most popular British television shows in the United States.

American Adaptations: Doctor Who Reimagined

The American fascination with Doctor Who did not stop at mere reruns. In 1996, the Fox network produced an American adaptation of the series, simply titled Doctor Who. This adaptation starred Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor and featured a more action-oriented and Americanized take on the classic show. While the American Doctor Who was met with mixed reviews from critics and fans, it did introduce the show to a new generation of American viewers.

In addition to the Fox adaptation, there have been several other American adaptations and spin-offs of Doctor Who. In 2007, the BBC and Syfy co-produced a series of four animated specials titled Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest. In 2015, Fox developed a prequel series titled Class, which focused on a group of students at Coal Hill School, the fictional London school that has been featured in many Doctor Who episodes. While these adaptations have varied in terms of quality and popularity, they all attest to the enduring appeal of Doctor Who in the American market.

Guest Appearances: Doctor Who Crosses Over

Doctor Who's American adventures have also included numerous guest appearances by American actors and celebrities. These guest appearances have helped to raise the show's profile in the United States and have introduced it to a wider audience. Some notable American guest stars in Doctor Who include:

  • Christopher Eccleston (the Ninth Doctor) appeared in the American television series Torchwood, a spin-off of Doctor Who.
  • David Tennant (the Tenth Doctor) appeared in the American television series The Sarah Jane Adventures, another spin-off of Doctor Who.
  • Matt Smith (the Eleventh Doctor) appeared in the American television series The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
  • Peter Capaldi (the Twelfth Doctor) appeared in the American television series The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
