Finding Freedom: An American Girl Classic Volume 5
Finding Freedom is the fifth book in the American Girl Classic series, published in 1995. It tells the story of Addy Walker, a 9-year-old girl who escapes from slavery with her mother and younger brother in 1864. The novel follows Addy as she and her family make their way north to freedom, facing challenges and dangers along the way.
The novel begins with Addy and her family living as slaves on a plantation in North Carolina. When the Union Army approaches, Addy's mother decides that it is time for them to escape. They pack their belongings and sneak away from the plantation in the middle of the night.
Addy and her family travel north through the woods, hiding from slave catchers and trying to find food and shelter. They meet other escaped slaves along the way, and they learn about the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped slaves escape to freedom.
