Kanzashi Tutorial: How to Make Kanzashi Fabric Flowers
Kanzashi are traditional Japanese fabric flowers that are often used to embellish hair accessories, clothing, and home décor. They are made from a variety of fabrics, including silk, cotton, and satin, and can be created in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Kanzashi are relatively easy to make, and with a little practice, you can create beautiful and delicate flowers that will add a touch of elegance to any project.
Materials
- Fabric (silk, cotton, or satin)
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Glue (optional)
Instructions
- Cut a circle of fabric. The size of the circle will determine the size of the flower. For a small flower, cut a circle with a diameter of about 2 inches. For a larger flower, cut a circle with a diameter of about 4 inches.
- Fold the circle of fabric in half and then in half again. You should now have a quarter-circle of fabric.
- Fold the two bottom corners of the quarter-circle of fabric up to the center point. Press the creases with your fingernail.
- Fold the two top corners of the quarter-circle of fabric down to the center point. Press the creases with your fingernail.
- You should now have a square of fabric with four petals. Bring the two bottom petals together and stitch them together at the center point. Do the same with the two top petals.
- Turn the flower over and fold the two bottom petals up and over the two top petals. Stitch the petals together at the center point.
- Repeat steps 6 and 7 to create additional petals. The number of petals you create will determine the fullness of the flower.
- Once you have created all of the petals, stitch them together at the center point. Be sure to secure the thread well so that the flower does not come apart.
- If desired, you can glue a bead or other embellishment to the center of the flower.
Tips
- Use a variety of fabrics to create different looks. Silk Kanzashi are very elegant, while cotton Kanzashi are more casual. Satin Kanzashi have a beautiful sheen that is perfect for special occasions.
- Experiment with different sizes and shapes of circles to create different types of flowers. For example, you can use a smaller circle to create a daisy-like flower, or a larger circle to create a rose-like flower.
- Add embellishments such as beads, sequins, or lace to create unique and beautiful Kanzashi flowers.
Kanzashi flowers are a beautiful and versatile way to embellish a variety of projects. With a little practice, you can create beautiful and delicate flowers that will add a touch of elegance to any project. So what are you waiting for?
