Charles Carroll of Carrollton was a courageous and influential figure in the American Revolution. As the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, he risked his life and fortune to fight for the cause of liberty. Carroll's unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom and self-governance helped to shape the course of American history.
Early Life and Education
Carroll was born on September 19, 1737, in Annapolis, Maryland. He was the son of Charles Carroll the Barrister, a wealthy and prominent lawyer. Carroll's mother, Mary Darnall Carroll, was a devout Catholic. Carroll received his early education at home from tutors. He then attended the Jesuit College of St. Omer in France, where he studied philosophy and theology. After graduating from St. Omer, Carroll returned to Maryland and began to study law.
Political Career
Carroll entered politics in 1768, when he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates. He quickly became a leading voice in the colony's resistance to British rule. Carroll served in the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1776, and he was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Carroll's signature on the Declaration was a bold act of defiance against the British Crown. He knew that he was risking his life and fortune by signing the document. However, Carroll believed that the cause of liberty was worth fighting for.
Service in the Continental Army
After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Carroll joined the Continental Army. He served as a volunteer aide-de-camp to General George Washington. Carroll participated in several important battles during the Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Trenton and the Battle of Yorktown. Carroll's bravery and leadership on the battlefield earned him the respect of his fellow soldiers.
Later Career
After the war, Carroll returned to Maryland and resumed his political career. He served in the Maryland Senate and the U.S. Senate. Carroll also served as a diplomat to France and Spain. Carroll was a strong supporter of the new federal government, and he helped to ratify the Constitution. Carroll retired from politics in 1792. He died on November 14, 1832, at the age of 95.
Legacy
Charles Carroll of Carrollton is remembered as one of the most important figures in the American Revolution. His courage, conviction, and dedication to the cause of liberty helped to secure the independence of the United States. Carroll's legacy continues to inspire Americans today. He is a reminder of the sacrifices that our forefathers made to create a more just and equitable world.
